Based in Napa, On The Move was founded in 2003 with a mission to develop and sustain young people as leaders by building exceptional programs that challenge inequities in their communities.

Working for over 18 years to expand throughout the Bay Area, On The Move has implemented programs and initiatives that develop the next generations of community leaders who reflect the diversity of the communities in which they live and work. In partnership with local communities, On The Move has explored innovative approaches to closing the achievement gap for children of color, transforming outcomes for former foster youth, promoting health and wellness across communities, and building strong, engaged families.

Since its founding, On The Move has demonstrated its ability to manage multiple government contracts and private grants in support of a variety of projects that require strong execution capabilities. On The Move has successfully implemented contracts with school systems, county governments, and state departments, successfully securing public funding as well as working in partnership with multiple foundations to design and administer cutting edge programming.

For nearly two decades, On The Move has created and implemented innovative programming that challenges communities and local leaders to push beyond mediocrity and into excellence. Supported by a track record of results-oriented programming and in partnership with the hundreds of established community partners, On The Move works to unite communities and focus on the safety and inclusion of all people.

Core Values

Integrity: We work to develop processes, values, and standards in pursuit of social equity in every community; we expect that all On The Move staff operate by these same processes, values, and standards across all programs and services.

Inclusion: We intentionally create and embrace environments that are inclusive and equitable.

Experiential Learning: We take risks, learn together, reflect on experiences, and grow from failure.

Shared Leadership: As we create new opportunities together, we share power and decision making in addition to responsibility.

Relationship: In order to do great work in the world, we must be known and know others. Healthy and authentic relationships create shared purpose.

Impact: We intentionally focus our efforts on actions that make a difference.

Programs and Partnerships

Throughout the evolution of OTM we have gleaned four key lessons that continue to guide the ongoing growth and development of our work:

  1. Programs must respond to an Urgent Need that is evidenced by data and information that comes directly from the people that the need impacts the most.

  2. We focus on Development, taking action on behalf of our self and others so that each of us is constantly developing, learning and transforming.

  3. In order to do great work, Co-Creation must take place. We ensure that children, youth and adults are working alongside staff to develop programs and meaningfully contribute to the issues that touch their lives.

  4. We develop Interdependent Partnerships, knowing that our work depends on our partners’ work and that authentic relationships that take time to develop. If we each bring our most unique and best selves - as organizational partners and people - we can work towards interdependent goals which we can not realize without each other.
