Developing Instructional Leaders

Reach Coaching Academy

One of the most important elements of the Reach Programs is the
opportunity that it presents for the development of instructional
leaders within each partner school.

Designed primarily for teachers in their fifth year or more of the profession, the mentor coaching academy will include the development of school based leaders who can support and challenge new teachers as well as improve their own performance and become leaders on their staff teams. Drawing on the models developed in OTM’s On The Verge and School Improvement programs, as well as utilizing the mentor development model of the New Teacher Center, the academy will include a series of intensive leadership trainings, six days in the summer and six days during the school year, as well as monthly cohort meetings to examine and reflect on their leadership practice. Coaches will work directly with teams of 3 or 4 new teachers in their school.

Coaches will participate in an annual retreat, four trainings in the “foundations in mentoring” series presented by the New Teacher Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and will participate in regular reflection, coaching on their leadership skills, and continuous improvement of their own teaching practice.

The coaching academy was inspired by the work with emerging leaders in the On The Verge program and by the leadership work of the Reach Design Team.
